I am sorry for all the people that have to use windows. There are much better options if you are not too entwined with their ecosystem.
People, if they have the time and/or gusto and/or a spare computer, should definitely try out alternatives for Windows. Some Linux distros spent effort on providing an interface that looks and feels a lot like Windows 11 or Windows 10. Their effort is appreciated, but I would not recommend using those. Because people seeing those interfaces will get expectations that are not covered by such interfaces and cause grief.
There are Linux distros that come with an interface that “feel” like Windows 7/Windows 10. Similar menu structures, more or less the same look, similar logic. Linux Mint is one of those and a pretty solid choice for Windows people wanting to dip their toes into Linux. It provides a good “feel” and a kind of familiarity, while still different enough to not instill false expectations. If persons can deal with a more different interface, I’m personally fond of Pop!_OS. Because after a hardware failure, I needed a different laptop and ended up with Pop!_OS as my daily driver for a year. It came with 80% of all the tools I use for work and play on Windows, so this jump from operating system was not nearly as bad as it can be for some. Database administration, System administration are pretty well covered. But I don’t have to deal with Adobe software. If you have to (or want to), Adobe doesn’t care about anything Linux at all, so you’ll have a hard time. MacOS will be a much better alternative in those cases. Those Mac Neo laptops seem to be quite capable and well built, especially for the money Apple charges for them.
All my kids machines RPD into win-server-2025 running in a linux VM lol.
