What Do You Look for When Choosing Networking Equipment for a Homelab?

When I first started looking at networking equipment for a homelab, I thought choosing a switch or other network hardware would be pretty straightforward. I mainly looked at port count and speed.

But after spending more time comparing different setups, I realized there are quite a few things worth considering before buying anything.

For me, these are some of the main things I now look at:

  • Port requirements – It is easy to underestimate how quickly ports get used when you have servers, access points, NAS devices, cameras, or other equipment.

  • Managed vs unmanaged – VLAN support and network segmentation can become important as the homelab grows.

  • Uplink speed – Gigabit may be enough for some setups, but 2.5GbE or 10GbE can make more sense when working with NAS storage or multiple servers.

  • PoE requirements – Access points, cameras, and similar devices can make PoE worth considering.

  • Noise and power consumption – This is especially important when the equipment is going to sit at home rather than in a dedicated server room.

  • Expandability – Buying something that works today is one thing, but having a little room to grow can prevent replacing everything later.

When you’re choosing a switch, router, or other networking equipment, what is usually your top priority: price, port count, speed, PoE, power consumption, or ecosystem compatibility?
